Uneven tone is the skin holding on to pigment it should have let go of. Sun spots gather where the light lands most, the cheeks and forehead. Post-inflammatory marks are the flat, darker patches a breakout leaves after it heals, and they are more common on medium and deeper skin tones. Larger, blurrier patches across the cheeks and upper lip may be melasma, which a dermatologist can confirm.
Two of the treatments here correct: the VI Peel lifts away the damaged outer layers so fresher, more even skin can take their place, and laser resurfacing works underneath the surface, where the skin renews from below without the top layer being disturbed. The other two brighten and maintain: a HydraFacial and the brightening signature facial clear the dull surface layer that makes discoloration look worse, with nothing to recover from.
Much of aesthetics was built around the lightest three Fitzpatrick types, and many peels and lasers still stop there. Rewind was built for everybody. The VI Peel was formulated for all six skin types, and the resurfacing laser's wavelength is absorbed by water rather than pigment, which is why both are the tools we reach for on deeper skin.
Many faces carry more than one kind. At the consultation your provider looks at what kind of pigment you have and how deep it sits, then tells you which treatment fits and which would be a waste of your time. If we do not think it will get you there, we will say so.
Freckled or blotchy pigment on the cheeks and forehead from years of sun. These point to the VI Peel's Precision Plus formula, or to laser resurfacing at a shallow depth, which your provider decides by how deep the pigment sits.
Flat, darker patches where acne healed, often along the jaw and cheeks. These point to the VI Peel: Precision Plus for the marks alone, or Purify with Precision Plus when breakouts are still active alongside them.
No single spot, but tone that reads uneven and tired. This points to a HydraFacial or the brightening signature facial, either on its own or between corrective treatments to keep the surface clear.
Lift it off, or renew it from below
The VI Peel works from the top down. It is a medium-depth peel built from a blend of five acids, so it reaches deeper than a light peel without the long healing time of a strong one. For discoloration your provider reaches for the Precision Plus formula, with its Lighten and Brighten boosters made for sun spots and post-breakout marks. The appointment takes 20 to 30 minutes and you leave with the peel on. Over the next week the damaged outer layers lift away at home, and by day seven the more even skin underneath is through.
Laser resurfacing works from the bottom up. The Erbium laser on our Secret DUO by Cutera sends heat into the dermis at a depth your provider sets, shallower for pigmentation, and leaves the surface intact. The skin answers by building new collagen and elastin, and the tone evens as it renews. In plain terms, it helps with pigmentation, dark spots, and sun damage, with little to no downtime, because the surface that deeper skin needs left alone is never broken.
The two facials keep the surface clear while the deeper work happens. A HydraFacial exfoliates, extracts, and hydrates through one spiral-tipped handpiece, so skin looks brighter the same afternoon. The brightening signature facial adds a boost of vitamin C and a gentle low-grade retinol peel, done by hand by our lead aesthetician after a close look at your skin. Neither corrects pigment on its own, and neither asks you to hide for a week.
A week of peeling, or none at all
The VI Peel asks for the most visible week. Expect mild redness for two days, peeling from day three to day six, and the result by day seven; more mature or sensitive skin may take until day ten. Hyperpigmentation typically takes three to five peels, spaced four to six weeks apart, then one or two a year to hold the result. Sunscreen every day is not optional, since the new skin is sensitive to sun while it comes in. How often to have a VI Peel covers the rhythm in more detail.
Laser resurfacing trades the peeling for patience. A numbing cream sits for about 15 minutes, the session itself runs about 30, and redness has usually faded by the next day. The change arrives over weeks as the collagen builds, and is best judged around three months. Pigmentation and sun damage tend to respond in fewer sessions than scarring, and your provider gives you a number after looking at your skin, not a standard series. HydraFacial and the brightening signature facial sit at the easy end: no downtime, about an hour or less, and a monthly or six-weekly rhythm.
Which one is right comes down to how deep the pigment sits, how dark your skin is, and what your calendar can spare. Many peels and lasers were only ever considered safe on the lightest three Fitzpatrick types, which is why we invest in devices and training that work on all six.
