Is Sculptra better than filler for volume loss?

Neither one is better across the board. Hyaluronic acid filler adds volume right away and can often be reduced with hyaluronidase, which suits targeted changes in appropriate areas. Sculptra rebuilds collagen gradually over a few months, which can suit broader facial thinning. A consultation can determine whether filler, a biostimulator, both, or neither fits your face.
How they compare
| Comparison | Hyaluronic acid filler | Sculptra (poly-L-lactic acid) |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | A gel that fills space and holds water | Stimulates your skin to make new collagen |
| When you see results | Right away | Gradually, over about 2 to 3 months |
| Typical plan | Often 1 visit | Often a series of 2 to 3 sessions, with spacing set by your provider |
| How long it lasts | Commonly 6 to 18 months, by product and area | Up to about 2 years in clinical studies |
| Reversible | Often reducible with hyaluronidase, with limits and risks | Not dissolved by hyaluronidase |
| Suits | Lips, tear troughs, cheek points, chin | Broad cheek hollowing; other areas, including temples or jawline, require assessment and may be off-label |
| Common after-effects | Swelling and bruising for a few days | Swelling and bruising; delayed lumps or nodules can occur |
Why the difference matters
Volume loss in your late 30s and 40s rarely happens in one spot. The fat pads shrink, bone changes shape slowly, and collagen thins everywhere at once. Filling one area with gel can look great up close and a little off from across the room if everything around it keeps thinning. Sculptra can address broader thinning. Filler adds precision where you want a defined change. The areas, amounts, and sequence should be assessed individually.
What Sculptra feels like week to week
Right after treatment, your face looks fuller because of the water the product is mixed with. That fades within a few days, and many people think it stopped working. It hasn't. Collagen builds slowly over the following weeks. That's why sessions are spaced out and results are judged at around three months, not three days.
Aftercare matters with Sculptra. Follow your provider's massage instructions. Manufacturer labeling recommends massage to help distribute the product and may reduce some nodules, but lumps can still occur despite following aftercare. Report persistent or new lumps to your provider.
Where Sculptra isn't used
Sculptra is not used in the lips and is kept away from the eye area. Hyaluronic acid filler is an option for some concerns, but suitability depends on the product and anatomy; under-eye injections require particular care. Neither the ability to dissolve HA filler nor careful placement removes all injection risks. Sculptra is also not the right pick if you need a visible change for an event in two weeks.
How to compare treatment plans
Filler and Sculptra plans can differ in product amounts, visits, and maintenance. Ask for the whole proposed course and what it includes, rather than comparing only the first visit. Our dermal filler longevity guide explains how duration varies by product and area.
How Rewind approaches it
Every plan at Rewind starts with a free 45-minute consultation. Rewind offers Sculptra and Radiesse. A licensed provider assesses where volume has been lost and discusses whether filler, a biostimulator, both, or neither fits. Dr. Jonathan Martinez is Medical Director for oversight; treatments are performed by the licensed treatment team.
FAQ
Can I do Sculptra and filler at the same visit?
Often yes, in different areas. Some providers space them out so it's clear what each one is doing.
Does Sculptra look natural?
Because it builds your own collagen gradually, results tend to look subtle and even.
What about Radiesse?
Radiesse is another biostimulator. It adds immediate structure and also stimulates collagen. Your provider can explain which fits your face.
